Today's clue is that they will someday have 6 legs. That confirmed that is has to be an insect. We thought of ant, ladybug and fly eggs. We decided ants don't eat grass so narrowed it down to 2 options. We were pretty sure that ladybugs eat grass and flies eat poop and yucky stuff so we convinced the fly group to switch votes to the ladybug group. They are not ladybug eggs. (Mrs. MacPhee needs to reread the Hungry Ladybug by Eric Carle because we have obviously forgotten what ladybugs eat!)

Today's clue is that someday the mystery objects will eat grass. Our ideas were woodtick eggs, grasshopper eggs or caterpillar eggs. We narrowed it down to caterpillar eggs or woodtick eggs. Then Treylin convinced most to agree with caterpillar eggs because even though woodticks live in grass they eat blood. But, they are not caterpillar eggs either. Maybe we will get it right tomorrow. We got two clues today. They were that it was found in Mrs. MacPhee's garden and the individual objects have living things in them. We had a hard time agreeing on good guesses. We came up with reptile eggs, bacteria and spider eggs. We remembered that when we talked about hand washing and germs and bacteria we couldn't actually see the germs to we eliminated that option. Jayden thought it would be spider eggs because we are reading Charlotte's Web and it is about a spider. It was hard to convince the reptile believers that is was not reptile eggs but the only reptile we knew in Manitoba is a garter snake and we had read a book about the mother having her babies in a birth sac instead of eggs. (We forgot that turtles are the other Manitoba reptiles.) In the end we agreed on spider eggs but that was not correct either.
More of the mystery was shown today. We thought it might be worms or beans. Keegan pointed out that beans and seeds are the same thing. We had grown beans from seeds so we realized he was right. Treylin noticed that our guess of seeds last day was not correct so it couldn't be beans. Our only other guess was worms. They are not worms either but we are a little bit closer. We wonder what tomorrow's clue will be. We have started a woodtick wall. Mrs. MacPhee had the first one today. I wonder how many we will collect during the next month?
Mrs. MacPhee brought a mystery object to class today. Here is a picture of it. She will give us one new clue each day and we will get one guess as a class each day. Today we guessed that it was mud and seeds. It was hard to agree on one answer but we did it! It is not mud and seeds. Can anyone else help us? We watched a live music show. The performers were kids from Brandon. They played violins, guitars, and cellos and were accompanied by someone on piano. It was cool. Kassidy said we knew a song called Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Rylan remembered that it was the very last song. Riley thought is was fun to watch because the kids must have worked really hard on it. Madisyn noticed that they took turns. Jayden noticed that they focused on the conductors. Hayden heard that some kids played for 15 years, and some had only played for one year. Kenji thought they were awesome. Jillian noticed they were really quiet when the other group performed. Riess noticed that the violin players put their violins under their arms when they were not playing.

Mrs. MacPhee
I've been teaching for over 20 years in three different provinces. Most of those years have been in the primary grades. I love teaching grade one because of the dramatic change I get to see in the children from the beginning of the year to the end of June. It truly is amazing! Archives
