We learned about the Philippines this week. Tita Rochelle and Tita Adette showed us pictures and told us about the Philippines on Monday. There are over 700 islands surrounded by water. There are many sharks in the water. They do lots of weaving with bamboo. They grow rice and pineapple. The chocolate hills are an amazing mystery because geologists don't know how they got there. They are called chocolate hills because the turn brown in the fallThey learn to speak Tagalog and English. We tried to learn a few words. Magandang umaga! is good morning and kamusta ka? is how are you? Salamat is thank you. On Wednesday we heard a legend about a pineapple and made a craft. On Thursday we got to try fresh pineapple and spring rolls. We all really loved the spring rolls. Each day we started with the Philippine anthem. When we sing we put our right hand on our heart as a sign of respect. On Friday we had an assembly where some people danced and played music and showed how to play Chinese garter. Albert and Eileen can sure jump high!
Ethiopia is a country in Africa. Part of the country is mountainous and part is hot and dry. Sometimes it even snows in the mountains but usually it is much warmer than here in Manitoba.
There are about 80,000,000 people living in the capital city called Addis Ababa. In all of Manitoba there are only about 1 million people. That means that Ethiopia is very crowded. The people have dark skin colour. Many people are very poor. In the city people live in houses but in the country they live in huts made of mud and straw. Boys get to go to school more often than girls. Girls have to stay home and help their mothers with chores. Only about three out of ten kids get to go to school. There are animals like lions, wolves, elephants, hyenas, zebras, baboons and water buffaloes. We are learning about different ways to stay safe. A Keep Secret is one that has a good ending like a surprise party or gift. A Speak Secret is one that you should tell to a trusted adult. It might be when someone hurts you and says not to tell or when something gives you a yucky feeling inside.
Another way to stay safe is by going to parks, swimming pools, going exploring in a field or walking to and from school with a buddy. We also need to stay away from ice and open water at this time of year. We should stay out of ditches. |

I've been teaching for over 20 years in three different provinces. Most of those years have been in the primary grades. I love teaching grade one because of the dramatic change I get to see in the children from the beginning of the year to the end of June. It truly is amazing! Archives
